2013: Holiday Gifts for kids of all ages!

On Sunday, December 1, 2013 0 comments

Okay, you know someone that has everything or nearly everything but you still need to get them a gift and need some help. Well, each year I strive to put together a nice line-up of things people "wouldn't mind" getting for the holidays. So let us get started...

I always recommend a fun advent calendar and mention the 2013 Lego Star Wars Advent Calendar set that comes out each holiday. This years Lego set is priced right at $39 and includes a great set of mini-Lego figures. But this year I also want to mention a new Angry Birds advent calendar from K'nex that might be fun, different and attractively priced at under $30.

Share some fun and laughter!

Every holiday season brings out a slew of new movies to see and this year is no different. And some of our favorite recommendations includes the sequel Despicable Me 2 available in Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD download. I can't say enough about how hilarious this film is...as funny as the original. Great characters and the minions are just cool!

Speaking of the Minions...how about picking up a Dave Talking Figure for yourself? This Dave is something special with 55 sayings and sound effects. Careful though...one of those sounds effects is him farting! :-)

Another family-friendly animated Blu-ray/DVD for the holidays is Disney's Planes. This movie brings you back to the Cars universe...but now it is planes racing. Truth be told, the movie is very formulaic but the kids will love it and laugh...and that is all that matters.

In quick succession I will also recommend the dark Superman reboot...Man of Steel, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey on Blu-ray to help you brush up on what happened so you can go see the second Hobbit movie coming out in December and Star Trek Into Darkness.

Bringing the family fun!

Collectible playing card games like Magic the Gathering and the like make for great gifts and for those that are new to playing these games, a starter set is just the thing to get them going. Be sure to pick up two sets so they can have another one for their friend or family member to play with. Magic the Gathering has been around a long-time now and is a favorite in my household and something I can highly recommend.

And if your gift recipient is a comic book fan, perhaps DC Comics Deck Building Game would be a nice surprise. This game requires 2-5 players, takes 30-45 minutes to play and brings together all the fan favorite heroes and villains. Play as Batman, Superman, The Flash, Green Lantern and yes...even Aquaman. Definitely worth checking out.

What about some toys?

Well if you ask any child nowadays or toy manufacturer for that matter, it is getting harder and harder to find a toy that will keep the attention of a child as well as a smart device. Sad but true. But toys are trying to fight back with some pretty clever solutions. These include toys that interact with game systems like the latest Skylanders SWAP Force or the new Disney Infinity. These toys interact with videogames to bring the characters to life.

There are also toys that have been updated to work with a smartphone like the new Furby Boom. The app unlocks an entire world where you can hatch a whole civilization of Furblings to enjoy. The app also includes a series of games you can play with your your Furby including Furbish soccer!

And if your little one is ready for their own smart device a first option could be the very nice LeapFrog LeapPad Ultra. This has been a popular tablet that hosts a slew of over 800 optional education and entertainment software in a durable package. The 7-inch tablet features a high-resolution screen and Wi-Fi. The LeadPad Ultra includes 11 apps including an art studio, photo app and has both a front and rear camera. Great for ages 4 - 9. Available for $149.

Okay...what about videogames?

This list could go on forever but I'll just quickly list some great titles for current systems:

3DS: Pokemon X or Pokemon Y (Pokemon Y is on my personal list because my son took my Pokemon X right when it arrived), Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds is the latest Zelda game and definitely worth playing through and lastly Mario and Luigi: Dream Team.

Consoles: LEGO MarvelMario 3D World and Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag are all highly recommended but be sure to pick up the right version for the recipients game system.

Now a great gift would be one of the new, powerful gaming consoles like the Sony Playstation 4 or Microsoft Xbox One but those are a bit hard to obtain. You can check the different bundles on Amazon to see if any of these consoles are available in one configuration or another.

Other tech worth getting?

Yes, the new iPad Air and iPad Mini with Retina are great products and are highly recommended. These are substantial updates with improved processing power thanks to a new 64-bit architecture.

Let us not forget that Amazon is in this fight with several great Kindle options including with their wonderful Paperwhite 6" ebook reader as well as the impressive Kindle Fire HDX 8.9" that is a highly competitive offering to the iPad for less.

And to keep all your gear working throughout the day, I personally rely on this small USB external battery pack.

We have found that streaming services are taking up more and more of our TV viewing time. And while I'm sure Apple is due for a substantial update to their Apple TV product at some point in the near future, I would have to say that the Apple TV is one of the best products to deliver streaming content to your TV. Yes, the Roku 3 is a great product as well but the seamless integration of iOS products and the Apple TV give it an edge.

I mentioned the Bose QuietComfort 20i Noise Canceling headphones in my "Wouldn't Mind "Getting into the Mood" Holiday Wish List 2013" piece a couple weeks ago but they warrant another mention. These are great travel companions with wonderful noise cancellation features as well as great audio quality.

And sometimes you need to share your tunes with others, so be sure to check out Bose's highly-rated SoundLink Mini Bluetooth speaker.

And for those over the ear headphone fans on your list, you have probably heard them mention Beats Solo HD headphones. These are very popular and come in a wide variety of colors. And check out my "Wouldn't Mind "Getting into the Mood" Holiday Wish List 2013" for some other great audio listening offerings including some impressive wireless headphones!

A holiday list from me needs cameras!

As I have mentioned on several occasions on this blog, with the improvements in camera technology in your smartphones many people are using their phone to take pictures. And there have been some phenomenal improvements in phone-camera technologies like the Lumia 1020 with its 41-megapixel camera. And yes, the Samsung's and Apple's out there take "good enough" pictures.

So if you are going to carry a camera it needs to add value to your life. It needs to provide something that your phone isn't delivering on. That is the challenge camera manufacturers have been facing over the past few years.

One thing a smartphone camera suffers from is its small lens and sensor. So a point-n-shoot pocket camera needs to provide improvements in those areas. Another area of weakness is phones do not have much in the way of telephoto zoom capabilities. So a camera should improve on those aspects and deliver a much better picture. Smart-devices benefit from being connected to the internet or your home network so hopefully the cameras can start to fill the gap there to help transport your photos out of the camera and get the online as painlessly as possible.

The two brands I have found to be the most trusted for me in the mass-market category are Canon and Sony of late. You should be pretty confident if you are purchasing one of these brands. That is not to say that you can't get a lemon from them but I have found them to be of well-constructed, have a solid list of features and typically deliver great pictures for whatever price point you are looking at. That is not to say that Nikon, Panasonic, Fuji and others don't make great cameras...but as a general statement for someone going out to just "pick up a camera" as a gift or order one online, those two brands have served me well these past few years.

My current camera favorites are:

Canon S120 is the latest PowerShot camera is the storied line of market-leading image quality in a pocket size camera. This camera takes beautiful pictures, provides all the flexible a knowledgeable photographer would want all in a rather small size.

I have mentioned the predecessors to this camera before. What makes it unique is while still being small, it features a larger sensor than the ones found in most point-n-shoot cameras. This combined with fast (f/1.8) high-quality optics, an impressive 12.1 sensor and 1080p video. Highly recommend this camera priced under $400.

A great reason to buy a camera to compliment your phone's camera is to get something that can zoom into distance targets. The new Sony HX50V is a wonderful camera to do just that. With its 30x optical zoom and image stabilization, you can get some amazing pictures. You also have a camera that can rapidly take 10 pictures per second to make sure you catch the action. This camera includes full HD 1080/60p video recording capabilities. Definitely a great travel camera!

Another thing a smartphone camera cannot do is swap out lenses to change out the dynamics of your photography. This is why we have seen a huge uptick is people buying digital SLR cameras. A great new product from Canon in this category is the EOS Rebel SL1. This is the smallest and lightest DSLR camera on the market and supports a great range of Canon lenses. And while it is small, it still features a large APS-C sensor to give you high-quality pictures that will look a lot nicer than a camera phone picture. Even though this is an entry-level DSLR, it is packed full of features, is simple to use and will make you glad you brought this camera with you on a trip or family event.

Computer Gear?

Absolutely! Yes, I am a fan of the Apple products and I'm sure you don't need my help in this category but I will tell you the Retina-based Macbook Pro's are awesome!

But there is some great complimentary gear to go with your Mac or Windows computers.

Anyone can benefit from some extra hard drive space. And Western Digital is the brand I have had the most reliability with. The WD My Passport Ultra Portable External Hard Drive is an excellent option. It supports USB 3.0 for faster transfers and leverages WD My Personal Cloud Storage as well.

How about a high-performance gaming mouse for their computer. Check out Razer's Naga 2014 MMO edition. Or Razer's BlackWidow Ultimate Mechanical PC Gaming keyboard!

And last but not least, a new wireless all-in-one printer like the Epson Expression Premium XP-810 color photo printer, scanner, copier and fax makes for a great gift to print out all those wonderful holiday pictures!

I hope these suggestions help you lock down those holiday gift ideas! Be sure to check out my "Wouldn't Mind "Getting into the Mood" Holiday Wish List 2013" for more great ideas!

2013...the BIG Year in Video-Gaming!

On Monday, July 1, 2013 0 comments

The Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) was held a couple of weeks ago and I am finally getting down to capturing my thoughts. This is the annual epicenter of what's new and exciting within the world of console and PC video games. E3 tees up introductions of the latest products coming out for the retails channels in time for the holiday season.

This year's show was particularly special and it was clearly the most dynamic show of the past five years and arguably the most profound showing in the 18 years of the event. Why?

Because this year we have the two hard core gaming platform providers, Microsoft and Sony both placing $1 billion bets on their brand new gaming systems in time for this holiday season in the midst of new competitive pressures from mobile and online. With that much on the line, this show proved to be full of energy, passion and talent all vying for the gaming consumers attention.

The challenge is that over the past two or three generations of console gaming platforms, the focus was on pleasing the core gaming consumer and making efforts to extend the audience further into the mainstream. Instead, the concept of buying a device to hook up to your television and playing a game is under direct pressure by those nifty smart-phones and tablets you carry around.

Those new handheld devices are not cheap...at least the good ones are not. But those new devices have access to an incredible amount of entertainment options ranging from web-surfing, streaming video, social networks, free(pay)-to-play and/or low-cost casual games. All of this consumes the players time and attention and now competes with the purchase of a home entertainment console and it's library of gaming options.

So it is up to the big console manufacturers to deliver a new, must-have gaming experience. Did they deliver? To some degrees I would say yes and to other degrees I would say kinda.

Let's look at the what Microsoft brought to the gunfight...

Microsoft introduced their new Xbox One. This is the next generation of the Xbox series which was first introduced in 2001 and followed up rather quickly with the Xbox 360 in 2005.

Now there has been quite a bit of confusion and reversals in go-to-market strategies for the Xbox One's introduction. Microsoft had planned to have their gaming console constantly connected to the internet. This would have afforded them the opportunity to introduce new content management systems that would be new value-propositions to the consumer as well as afford them and their publishing partners (companies that make and distribute the games) the opportunity to limit reselling the disk multiple times.

While the new features of not needing the disk in the device once a game is installed allowing you to hop from one game or application to another quickly was exciting as well as the ability for others in your family to share the same games was great. But the restrictions on sharing met with incredible negative backlash from the core gaming community.

Another strike for Microsoft was that the Xbox One would include the Kinect gesture camera technology, something that was optional with the Xbox 360. The issue is that this piece of technology as well as some extra capabilities built into the box such as support for cable card tuner support has lead to a premium price of $499 at launch. In this economy, it caught a few consumers off-guard.

And unlike the Xbox 360 which was backward compatible with its predecessor, the One will not support older games including the digital download library of games on Xbox Arcade.

Okay, that all lead to a very bumpy start for Microsoft even for traditionally Xbox fans and is reflected in a good bit of consumer confusion and resistance to purchasing this console out the gate. But Microsoft still has a ton of stuff up their sleeve to help win people back...it will just take time. And these console wars are just that, WARS...made up of many battles.

So what's next for Microsoft? It will focus on several fronts including exclusive game content, Xbox Live services and advanced media capabilities including seamless integration with all your entertainment needs.

First, its all about the games...at least for now. Microsoft is reportedly spending $1 billion in the creation of exclusive internally developed games as well as exclusive 3rd party games developed by others. This war chest of games was quite prominent at the Xbox E3 Media event held the day before the show opened.

Games of note only on Microsoft's platforms included: Titanfall (developed by creators of successful Call of Duty franchise), Ryse: Son of Rome (made by leading 3D technology developer Crytek), Forza 5 (photo-realistic auto racing), Killer Instinct (Rare...previously a Nintendo studio), Sunset Overdrive (creators of Sony's popular Ratchet & Clank), Dead Rising 3 and Microsoft's own Halo.

For a well curated list of forthcoming Xbox One titles, check out IGN's complete list.

One note, is that a Microsoft exclusive can include desktop PC support such as Respawn's Titanfall which will be available for Xbox One, Xbox 360 and PC.

Whereas Forza Motorsport 5 is an Xbox One exclusive...

Dead Rising 3 - Another 3rd Party exclusive

What did Sony have up their sleeve?

$399! That is what they had up their sleeve. Originally Sony had planned to include a camera...not unlike the Kinect on Xbox One but instead chose to strike at a much lower price point. This and the fact that Sony had similar computing power (actually a bit more) as well as a non-restrictive digital rights management scheme (DRM)...meant this device behaved similar to current software disk practices of buy, loan to friend and/or resell to retailer all lead to the "gamers choice" coming out of the early days of the show.

Sony's new Playstation is an all-new architecture which is more consistent with other contemporary platforms. As a result, it is quite easy for a game developer to produce games that run on Xbox One, PS4 as well as PC. Even Nintendo's Wii U is not too dissimilar but substantially less horse-powered. But as a result, PS4's are not backward compatible with older Playstation games.

Consistent with the PS3, the Playstation 4 will be able to play Blu-ray discs.

While it is still left up to how the game developers choose to leverage it, but Sony is really pushing the Playstation Vita as a second-screen platform for the new PS4. We'll have to wait and see how the games can benefit from this type of setup.

To that end, the Day One allotment sold out on Amazon in a few days VS Xbox One Day One being still available two weeks after the show. Now they could have had different quantities and the like but still seems a bit telling...obviously this is not great journalism...but when did I claim this site was :-)

I would still give props to Microsoft for their online services offerings (streaming, content & cloud is best in class) which are definitely a leg up over Sony's but if you are looking for a straight-forward gaming console with a solid online offering including their Cloud streaming solution acquired from Gaikai, this looks like your guy.

Exclusives for PS4 include: Infamous: Second Son, Knack (Mark Cerny), The Order: 1886 (ex-Naughty Dog and Blizzard team), Driveclub (Evolution Studios), Deep Down (Capcom) and Kill Zone.

A complete list of Playstation 4 titles is being expertly compiled by the great crew over at IGN.

An E3 show report without mentioning Nintendo?

With so much going on in the Microsoft and Sony camps and the nearly imperceptible movement in the Wii U universe it was very easy to "forget Nintendo". I am sorry to say, it was even detectable within the booth itself which was filled with Disneyland-type character sets. My kids would have had fun in the booth but anyone looking for new treasure troves of great Nintendo gaming would have had a hard time finding much.

If you are one of the gamers that have a Wii U or are considering one, check out these upcoming Wii U titles. Of note, the usual Nintendo in-house (1st party) games look strong but they seem to be few and far between since the launch of the Wii U last year. This includes Super Mario 3D World, Mariocart 8, Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze and Super Smash Brothers. Tons of familiar brands...new Wii U packaging.

Other Standout Titles

Tom Clancy's The Division
Arguably one of the most ambitious titles from this year's show.

The Witcher 3
Visually stunning, open-world RPG which is suppose to be 20% larger than Skyrim

Destiny
Bungie the makers of Halo

Battlefield 4
Strong point really looks to be the 64-player gameplay

Metal Gear Solid V
Taking MGS into an open-world environment

Conclusion

If you have reviewed the attached videos you are probably beginning to see the benefits of what a dedicated, next-generation console can deliver from a pure visual standpoint. The demonstrations here are all first-gen and if you have lived through a lifecycle or two of consoles before you know that as the developers continue to refine their technologies, these games will continue to evolve.

I am already encouraged that the new platforms are moving the art of interactive entertainment to another level and with the inclusion of enhanced online, multiplayer, cloud-computing and streaming capabilities...more is to come.

I didn't focus on the network, online aspects of the platforms as we really haven't been shown the final incarnation. When these features and capabilities become more clear at or near launch, I'll be sure to provide more information within the final product reviews.

The big question, hopefully the consumers will come with money-in-hand to purchase these new platforms and make them a viable business environment for another generation of gamers!

Sony Announced Playstation 4

On Wednesday, February 20, 2013 0 comments

With much fanfare, Sony just announced the not-too-shocking existence of the Playstation 4. And if you have followed any of the rumor coverage leading up to this over the past 6 months, the specifications are pretty much in-line with everyone's expectations.

With the first three incarnations of Sony's Playstation selling a combined 300 million units...this system has a lot of live up to. Unlike previous versions, at the heart of the PS4 is a more traditional (but very robust) PC-like architecture...making it easier to develop games and port content to/from other systems such as Microsoft's Xbox.

The system itself was not shown but we did get to see the updated PS controller which now includes a touchpad surface and some greater motion/depth control functionality.

The console market needs to evolve as they have been challenged with player's attention in other areas including the onslaught of mobile and social games available today...many offered in a "freemium" pricing model. Nintendo's recent introduction of their Wii U gaming console has started off slow. I would contribute some of this underwhelming start to the lack of original content. There was no "must have" titles at launch for Nintendo's console. Hopefully Sony has learned a lesson from Nintendo's snafu?

Now I am definitely not bought into the death of the console BUT the paradigms need to change...change drastically. And if executed well, some of these capabilities mentioned today for the PS4 could be the start of something new especially in the area of leveraging the Cloud (a host of internet services).

What would a new platform nowadays be without social integration and this one features some very nice new hooks including the ability for a player to broadcast his game and even let friends jump in to help. Other "cloud-type" capabilities include intelligent delivery of content, the ability to start playing a game while it is downloading and sharing your gaming experience with friends.

Sony did parade a line-up of developers and publishers on stage committed to the new console but what content will be at the launch is the big question. Today we saw preliminary demos from Capcom, Ubisoft, Activision, Guerrilla Games, Sucker Punch, Square Enix, etc.

I will say that the games were visually better from current generation console games with more focus on advanced particle systems, some richer detailed environments, more NPC's on screen and a smoother frame-rate which can add up to an overall better gaming experience. But the games shown did not have a level of "magical" that we experienced with the last generation when it comes to its overall presentation.

You should note that we are comparing highly-mature current generation games to first-gen on the PS4. I'm sure more advances will come about as the game tools and production pipeline matures. I will say that fire and smoke, lighting, camera filters and effects and other atmospheric visuals look amazing and added another level of realism.

Pricing and the actually release date (except to say holiday 2013) were not issued but I am sure we will get much more details at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles this June.  We'll get much more information then.

The 2012 - What not to buy this holiday season!

On Wednesday, November 21, 2012 0 comments

Every year there are product offers that seem too good to be true and as the adage goes...probably are. There are also gleaming new products entering the marketplace that from your first impression...these are awesome! But once you get it home you find out that the dream doesn't live up to reality.

My job around this time of year is to make sure you don't get caught up in the hype or end up getting something that will soon be obsoleted. Or at least you are informed enough to make the best decision for yourself.

So what don't you get over these Black Friday and holiday sales?
I would avoid gaming consoles EXCEPT for the Nintendo Wii U and perhaps the Nintendo 3DS (or 3DS XL). The Xbox 360 is at its end of life and is due for an update that should appear next year. The PlayStation 3 is pretty much in the same position. The Playstation Vita is just plain bad with a rather weak game library.

In the cameras I would avoid category, I was really excited about the prospect of a Canon mirrorless camera (Digital SLR cameras have a mirror so you can peek through a viewfinder and see what the camera's chip will see but this means they have to be pretty large) that takes advantage of the entire Canon library of lens. The Canon EOS-M had tons of promise...that at the end of the day just didn't deliver. It is a nice enough camera but it is missing a few physical dials to make sure functions easier to access and a rather slow focus...just ends up disappointing.

In a similar vein, I am not blown away by Nikon's offer in this category either. The Nikon 1 is a mirrorless camera but also exhibits slow focus speeds as well.

On the computer front, I would avoid the new Microsoft Surface tablet. Sure it looks cools with an all-new interface but try to use it! Unlike the Apple iPads, you have to micro-manage your memory on the Surface. If you have a few apps open...it starts to slow down and not run smoothly. I even had apps that wouldn't load! And don't be fooled, this is not a real computer running Windows 8. It is a version called RT that requires you to purchase new apps. For more information on why to avoid the Surface, check out my more in-depth Don't Buy a Microsoft Surface...not ready for prime-time piece.
Another Windows 8 device I was looking forward to but it ultimately let me down was the Lenovo Yoga 13. Okay, let me say that if you are looking for strictly a sleek Windows 8 ultrabook...then the Yoga might actually be a great choice. But as a tablet...it just doesn't deliver. Too bulky and cumbersome.

Televisions and digital cameras tend to see major updates in the early months of next year causing this years models to go on sale. It is then up to you to decide if the new version warrants the extra money or if you can save a good chunk on last years model. Even clothing and jewelry will see major discounts after the holidays as well!

And now you might be asking what do I get? Well be sure to check out my "2012 Holiday Gifts for your Cool Kids of All Ages" article.

And did I miss anything? Something else that should have been on this list of what to avoid? Add it in the comments below!

E3 2012 - Nintendo Wii U Game Introduction Video Highlights

On Thursday, June 7, 2012 0 comments

I've compiled some video highlights from Nintendo's Electronic Entertainment Expo Wii U game introductions. The video gives you a quick sneak peak at some of the games and features you can look forward to on this new gaming platform launching later this year.

Overall the Wii U's game graphics looks like higher resolution versions of what you are use to on the original Wii. But it is clearly a more powerful system and does feature some 3rd party games similar to what you see on an Xbox 360 or Sony Playstation.

While it wasn't announced, Microsoft and most likely Sony will have their new gaming systems at next year's show for launch during the 2013 holiday season. So for a brief period of time, Nintendo's graphics will be on parity but we'll have to wait and see just where Microsoft and Sony take their platforms to see if Nintendo will once again lag on the platform wars.

Now Nintendo has proven time and time again...it is all about the games and not graphics BUT the issue is that a 3rd party publisher like Ubisoft, EA or Activision want to release their titles on all platforms and Nintendo typically suffers from the fact that it's platforms are not able to accomodate a port of game from the other systems. So 3rd party content tends to be limited to what companies want to make Nintendo original content or heavy-duty/stripped down version.

For launch, since the Wii U is in the ballpark of Xbox 360 we are seeing some ports like Assassin's Creed 3. But this will probably dry up after the first year.

So check out the video to see some of the games in action...

E3 2012 - Sony PS Vita - Very weak showing!

On Wednesday, June 6, 2012 0 comments

I don't even know where to begin. What was Sony thinking? They bring out a a killer new piece of hardware in the form of a mobile gaming powerhouse called the PS Vita and then pop out some uninspiring games to go on it? Did they think developers would jump on to a platform they are not even supporting with their own killer content to drive sales?

Okay, I will give you that Uncharted on the PS Vita was a very good game. And there is some nice "online arcade" quality titles available that are worth playing if you have the device. Highlights of the show were Little Big Planet, Assassin's Creed 3: Liberation and Soundshapes...all very solid offerings. But after that, your kinda looking at 25 mediocre titles from the demos at the show. Just not enough excitement to pull the trigger on another piece of hardware to carry around.

What was I hoping for? How about a handful of top-tier 1st party titles like an original God of War? Instead I get Playstation One classics? Come on! You are killing me! This is a powerful device that I am going to play 10+ year old games on? IF that was the caliber of content you were going to push...you should have lower the specs on the hardware and sold it for $100!

I realize the economics of the thing. Small installed base...doesn't justify development dollars. But then you shouldn't build the thing and sell it to me! It is kinda a self fulfilling situation as it stands. Make the bet or don't even try.

This was definitely not the year of the handheld gaming console. Sony largely forgot to talk about the platform in their press conference and Nintendo pretty much did the same thing??? Mobile smart devices are clearly winning out here and that is a very sad state of affair. Having a quality mobile gaming device with physical controllers makes all the difference. But the device needs to have the content to justify owning it and carrying it with you.

I really don't know what to expect at this stage but if you are remotely considering buying a PS Vita...don't! I guess Sony has "one last chance" to resolve this at the Tokyo Game Show in September. But I am not holding my breath.
