2013...the BIG Year in Video-Gaming!

On Monday, July 1, 2013 0 comments

The Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) was held a couple of weeks ago and I am finally getting down to capturing my thoughts. This is the annual epicenter of what's new and exciting within the world of console and PC video games. E3 tees up introductions of the latest products coming out for the retails channels in time for the holiday season.

This year's show was particularly special and it was clearly the most dynamic show of the past five years and arguably the most profound showing in the 18 years of the event. Why?

Because this year we have the two hard core gaming platform providers, Microsoft and Sony both placing $1 billion bets on their brand new gaming systems in time for this holiday season in the midst of new competitive pressures from mobile and online. With that much on the line, this show proved to be full of energy, passion and talent all vying for the gaming consumers attention.

The challenge is that over the past two or three generations of console gaming platforms, the focus was on pleasing the core gaming consumer and making efforts to extend the audience further into the mainstream. Instead, the concept of buying a device to hook up to your television and playing a game is under direct pressure by those nifty smart-phones and tablets you carry around.

Those new handheld devices are not cheap...at least the good ones are not. But those new devices have access to an incredible amount of entertainment options ranging from web-surfing, streaming video, social networks, free(pay)-to-play and/or low-cost casual games. All of this consumes the players time and attention and now competes with the purchase of a home entertainment console and it's library of gaming options.

So it is up to the big console manufacturers to deliver a new, must-have gaming experience. Did they deliver? To some degrees I would say yes and to other degrees I would say kinda.

Let's look at the what Microsoft brought to the gunfight...

Microsoft introduced their new Xbox One. This is the next generation of the Xbox series which was first introduced in 2001 and followed up rather quickly with the Xbox 360 in 2005.

Now there has been quite a bit of confusion and reversals in go-to-market strategies for the Xbox One's introduction. Microsoft had planned to have their gaming console constantly connected to the internet. This would have afforded them the opportunity to introduce new content management systems that would be new value-propositions to the consumer as well as afford them and their publishing partners (companies that make and distribute the games) the opportunity to limit reselling the disk multiple times.

While the new features of not needing the disk in the device once a game is installed allowing you to hop from one game or application to another quickly was exciting as well as the ability for others in your family to share the same games was great. But the restrictions on sharing met with incredible negative backlash from the core gaming community.

Another strike for Microsoft was that the Xbox One would include the Kinect gesture camera technology, something that was optional with the Xbox 360. The issue is that this piece of technology as well as some extra capabilities built into the box such as support for cable card tuner support has lead to a premium price of $499 at launch. In this economy, it caught a few consumers off-guard.

And unlike the Xbox 360 which was backward compatible with its predecessor, the One will not support older games including the digital download library of games on Xbox Arcade.

Okay, that all lead to a very bumpy start for Microsoft even for traditionally Xbox fans and is reflected in a good bit of consumer confusion and resistance to purchasing this console out the gate. But Microsoft still has a ton of stuff up their sleeve to help win people back...it will just take time. And these console wars are just that, WARS...made up of many battles.

So what's next for Microsoft? It will focus on several fronts including exclusive game content, Xbox Live services and advanced media capabilities including seamless integration with all your entertainment needs.

First, its all about the games...at least for now. Microsoft is reportedly spending $1 billion in the creation of exclusive internally developed games as well as exclusive 3rd party games developed by others. This war chest of games was quite prominent at the Xbox E3 Media event held the day before the show opened.

Games of note only on Microsoft's platforms included: Titanfall (developed by creators of successful Call of Duty franchise), Ryse: Son of Rome (made by leading 3D technology developer Crytek), Forza 5 (photo-realistic auto racing), Killer Instinct (Rare...previously a Nintendo studio), Sunset Overdrive (creators of Sony's popular Ratchet & Clank), Dead Rising 3 and Microsoft's own Halo.

For a well curated list of forthcoming Xbox One titles, check out IGN's complete list.

One note, is that a Microsoft exclusive can include desktop PC support such as Respawn's Titanfall which will be available for Xbox One, Xbox 360 and PC.

Whereas Forza Motorsport 5 is an Xbox One exclusive...

Dead Rising 3 - Another 3rd Party exclusive

What did Sony have up their sleeve?

$399! That is what they had up their sleeve. Originally Sony had planned to include a camera...not unlike the Kinect on Xbox One but instead chose to strike at a much lower price point. This and the fact that Sony had similar computing power (actually a bit more) as well as a non-restrictive digital rights management scheme (DRM)...meant this device behaved similar to current software disk practices of buy, loan to friend and/or resell to retailer all lead to the "gamers choice" coming out of the early days of the show.

Sony's new Playstation is an all-new architecture which is more consistent with other contemporary platforms. As a result, it is quite easy for a game developer to produce games that run on Xbox One, PS4 as well as PC. Even Nintendo's Wii U is not too dissimilar but substantially less horse-powered. But as a result, PS4's are not backward compatible with older Playstation games.

Consistent with the PS3, the Playstation 4 will be able to play Blu-ray discs.

While it is still left up to how the game developers choose to leverage it, but Sony is really pushing the Playstation Vita as a second-screen platform for the new PS4. We'll have to wait and see how the games can benefit from this type of setup.

To that end, the Day One allotment sold out on Amazon in a few days VS Xbox One Day One being still available two weeks after the show. Now they could have had different quantities and the like but still seems a bit telling...obviously this is not great journalism...but when did I claim this site was :-)

I would still give props to Microsoft for their online services offerings (streaming, content & cloud is best in class) which are definitely a leg up over Sony's but if you are looking for a straight-forward gaming console with a solid online offering including their Cloud streaming solution acquired from Gaikai, this looks like your guy.

Exclusives for PS4 include: Infamous: Second Son, Knack (Mark Cerny), The Order: 1886 (ex-Naughty Dog and Blizzard team), Driveclub (Evolution Studios), Deep Down (Capcom) and Kill Zone.

A complete list of Playstation 4 titles is being expertly compiled by the great crew over at IGN.

An E3 show report without mentioning Nintendo?

With so much going on in the Microsoft and Sony camps and the nearly imperceptible movement in the Wii U universe it was very easy to "forget Nintendo". I am sorry to say, it was even detectable within the booth itself which was filled with Disneyland-type character sets. My kids would have had fun in the booth but anyone looking for new treasure troves of great Nintendo gaming would have had a hard time finding much.

If you are one of the gamers that have a Wii U or are considering one, check out these upcoming Wii U titles. Of note, the usual Nintendo in-house (1st party) games look strong but they seem to be few and far between since the launch of the Wii U last year. This includes Super Mario 3D World, Mariocart 8, Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze and Super Smash Brothers. Tons of familiar brands...new Wii U packaging.

Other Standout Titles

Tom Clancy's The Division
Arguably one of the most ambitious titles from this year's show.

The Witcher 3
Visually stunning, open-world RPG which is suppose to be 20% larger than Skyrim

Destiny
Bungie the makers of Halo

Battlefield 4
Strong point really looks to be the 64-player gameplay

Metal Gear Solid V
Taking MGS into an open-world environment

Conclusion

If you have reviewed the attached videos you are probably beginning to see the benefits of what a dedicated, next-generation console can deliver from a pure visual standpoint. The demonstrations here are all first-gen and if you have lived through a lifecycle or two of consoles before you know that as the developers continue to refine their technologies, these games will continue to evolve.

I am already encouraged that the new platforms are moving the art of interactive entertainment to another level and with the inclusion of enhanced online, multiplayer, cloud-computing and streaming capabilities...more is to come.

I didn't focus on the network, online aspects of the platforms as we really haven't been shown the final incarnation. When these features and capabilities become more clear at or near launch, I'll be sure to provide more information within the final product reviews.

The big question, hopefully the consumers will come with money-in-hand to purchase these new platforms and make them a viable business environment for another generation of gamers!

Sony Announced Playstation 4

On Wednesday, February 20, 2013 0 comments

With much fanfare, Sony just announced the not-too-shocking existence of the Playstation 4. And if you have followed any of the rumor coverage leading up to this over the past 6 months, the specifications are pretty much in-line with everyone's expectations.

With the first three incarnations of Sony's Playstation selling a combined 300 million units...this system has a lot of live up to. Unlike previous versions, at the heart of the PS4 is a more traditional (but very robust) PC-like architecture...making it easier to develop games and port content to/from other systems such as Microsoft's Xbox.

The system itself was not shown but we did get to see the updated PS controller which now includes a touchpad surface and some greater motion/depth control functionality.

The console market needs to evolve as they have been challenged with player's attention in other areas including the onslaught of mobile and social games available today...many offered in a "freemium" pricing model. Nintendo's recent introduction of their Wii U gaming console has started off slow. I would contribute some of this underwhelming start to the lack of original content. There was no "must have" titles at launch for Nintendo's console. Hopefully Sony has learned a lesson from Nintendo's snafu?

Now I am definitely not bought into the death of the console BUT the paradigms need to change...change drastically. And if executed well, some of these capabilities mentioned today for the PS4 could be the start of something new especially in the area of leveraging the Cloud (a host of internet services).

What would a new platform nowadays be without social integration and this one features some very nice new hooks including the ability for a player to broadcast his game and even let friends jump in to help. Other "cloud-type" capabilities include intelligent delivery of content, the ability to start playing a game while it is downloading and sharing your gaming experience with friends.

Sony did parade a line-up of developers and publishers on stage committed to the new console but what content will be at the launch is the big question. Today we saw preliminary demos from Capcom, Ubisoft, Activision, Guerrilla Games, Sucker Punch, Square Enix, etc.

I will say that the games were visually better from current generation console games with more focus on advanced particle systems, some richer detailed environments, more NPC's on screen and a smoother frame-rate which can add up to an overall better gaming experience. But the games shown did not have a level of "magical" that we experienced with the last generation when it comes to its overall presentation.

You should note that we are comparing highly-mature current generation games to first-gen on the PS4. I'm sure more advances will come about as the game tools and production pipeline matures. I will say that fire and smoke, lighting, camera filters and effects and other atmospheric visuals look amazing and added another level of realism.

Pricing and the actually release date (except to say holiday 2013) were not issued but I am sure we will get much more details at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles this June.  We'll get much more information then.

E3 2012 - Sony PS Vita - Very weak showing!

On Wednesday, June 6, 2012 0 comments

I don't even know where to begin. What was Sony thinking? They bring out a a killer new piece of hardware in the form of a mobile gaming powerhouse called the PS Vita and then pop out some uninspiring games to go on it? Did they think developers would jump on to a platform they are not even supporting with their own killer content to drive sales?

Okay, I will give you that Uncharted on the PS Vita was a very good game. And there is some nice "online arcade" quality titles available that are worth playing if you have the device. Highlights of the show were Little Big Planet, Assassin's Creed 3: Liberation and Soundshapes...all very solid offerings. But after that, your kinda looking at 25 mediocre titles from the demos at the show. Just not enough excitement to pull the trigger on another piece of hardware to carry around.

What was I hoping for? How about a handful of top-tier 1st party titles like an original God of War? Instead I get Playstation One classics? Come on! You are killing me! This is a powerful device that I am going to play 10+ year old games on? IF that was the caliber of content you were going to push...you should have lower the specs on the hardware and sold it for $100!

I realize the economics of the thing. Small installed base...doesn't justify development dollars. But then you shouldn't build the thing and sell it to me! It is kinda a self fulfilling situation as it stands. Make the bet or don't even try.

This was definitely not the year of the handheld gaming console. Sony largely forgot to talk about the platform in their press conference and Nintendo pretty much did the same thing??? Mobile smart devices are clearly winning out here and that is a very sad state of affair. Having a quality mobile gaming device with physical controllers makes all the difference. But the device needs to have the content to justify owning it and carrying it with you.

I really don't know what to expect at this stage but if you are remotely considering buying a PS Vita...don't! I guess Sony has "one last chance" to resolve this at the Tokyo Game Show in September. But I am not holding my breath.

UPDATED: Hottest Games Worth Seeing from E3 2012

On Monday, June 4, 2012 0 comments

Here are some sneak peaks at some of the top "potential" games at E3 this year...

Ubisoft delivers another amazing demo...

Aassassin's Creed finally evolves from 2 to 3...new additional settings and characters...

Laura deserves a good return to gaming and I'm hopeful that this product delivers...

Halo 4...with a whole new team and big shoes to fill!

Metal Gear has been a favorite of mind...even with the freaky characters and story-lines. I have really enjoyed the innovative stealth gameplay. It will be interesting to see how this game evolves the universe.

Rayman Legends exclusive to the new Nintendo Wii U

Resident Evil 6 - I still remember jumping out of my chair in RE1 when the dogs came through the window!

Star Wars 1313 - A more mature and dark story around a very lethal bounty hunter. A major collaberation of art talent across the Lucas groups.

And for those old-school simulation folks...an impressive looking new SimCity in heading our way!

I still haven't played the original Skyrim that came out last year. Everyone says it is great but takes an RPG-level of commitment that I just don't have at this time.

More to come...

Don't buy for the Holidays! - 2011

On Tuesday, December 13, 2011 0 comments

Okay, "Don't buy" might be a bit strong but one topic of discussion I seem to have with friends and family throughout the holiday season is "what not to buy". As you already know, technology evolves at an amazing pace and it can be tough keeping track of what to BUY and what to WAIT for. When I say WAIT, I am anticipating a new version of these products coming out shortly after the holidays that makes it potentially worth waiting for the latest incarnation with some meaningful new features. Nearly all of these products I have endorsed throughout the year but a newer iteration is probably in the wings. So here's a list of what I would suggest holding off or still feel save in purchasing...

DISCLAIMER: I am operating here slightly in the blind as manufacturers do not announce replacements typically for products until after the holiday season at the Consumer Electronics Show the first part of January. But I will take a stab at helping to navigate the obvious areas where a new version is probably due.

The big questions I get asked a lot about is Apple gear, so let me sort through that for you a bit.
iPod Nano and Touch - These both saw recent updates and are probably safe bets as a product that will not get obsoleted in the next 6 months or more. I really like the iPod Nano (starting at $123) for those active people in your life and the iPod Touch ($199+) for your friends that enjoy a range of media and entertainment options.

Apple iPod Touch - BUY
iPod Shuffle and Classic - Unless you have a specific reason why you'd be getting one, I would avoid these older versions. The Nano is roughly the same size as a Shuffle but offers a lot more functionality and the Classic is totally outclassed by the Touch.

iPhone - The iPhone 4s (price varies) is a great phone and I just don't see Apple racing to a larger, more costly, bigger display version until late 2012 at the earliest.

Apple iPad 2 - WAIT
iPad - This is the product I would not get if it was me. All indications are that a new version is in the works for a spring introduction. The original iPad was launched in April of 2009 with the iPad2's introduction 11 months later in March of 2010. All the noise continues to center around an annual update of the iPad ($499+). What makes the new device worth waiting for? I hate to continue to propagate the rumors on the web but I'd imagine a beefier CPU, better cameras and higher resolution monitor to make characters on the screen easier to read. I would love a version with additional storage capacity 128GB would be awesome but with Apple's usual design practices and them talking up Cloud storage...I wouldn't be surprised if they stick to the 64GB maximum.

Macbook Air - WAIT
Macbook Air - Lot's of noise around an update to this very slim portable, including a potential new 15" version. I love my Macbook Air (less than $1,000) but new CPU and configuration options are due. Most other Macintosh laptops and iMacs are looking good.

Apple TV - BUY
Apple TV - I really like this cool little hockey puck sized device for streaming your Apple content to a TV. Apple's Airplay feature that seamlessly allows you to share your content between handheld devices like the iPod Touch, iPhone and iPad through the Apple TV ($99) and onto your television is a great thing. But like I mentioned in my recent 2011 Holiday Video Gear Wish List, this product is best for the Apple-friendly home. If you are running Android or other OS-based mobile devices, the limitations on types of files supported can get frustrating. As for BUY or WAIT? This is a tough category to judge. Apple have a newer CPU already in the iPhone 4s and could release a new version next year with true 1080p resolution and enhanced connectivity options. And if I had to guess, they will probably wait til their holiday line-up changes which would put this on the plan for upgrade in September of next year. There is also rumored an Apple flat-panel TV in development and the Apple TV as we know it might become integrated in their future televisions but that is probably a year or two away. I am leaning toward it being a BUY for this holiday season.

More computers?
Windows 8 next year - WAIT
The big thing in the PC camp is Windows 8. While Windows 7 has really helped repair consumer goodwill after the quality challenges of Vista, Windows 8 will bring more mobility and connectivity to the platform. The biggest consumer additions will be the reinvention of the user interface and the App Store that makes it easy to get the latest and greatest applications. If you need a new laptop, go ahead and BUY one but if you can WAIT...there will probably be a lot of innovation in this category over the next year.

Tablets - As I mentioned above, I would wait for the next iteration of the iPad. I still do not recommend any other tablet in the marketplace. The Android marketplace for tablets is minuscule and just not that thrilling. There is a new version of Android entering the marketplace and we can wait to see how they pan out. I will be doing a review on the Asus Transformer quad-core tablet in the coming weeks and will keep you in the loop.

What about Game Systems?
WAIT for the Nintendo Wii U
Nintendo Wii - I would really avoid buying this gaming platform. Games for your current Wii are fine but the Wii is on it's last legs and there is the new Nintendo Wii U coming out next year. The final details of the Wii U will be announced before or at the videogame tradeshow E3 the first week of June.

Nintendo 3DS - This is a new product that just launched earlier this year. The Nintendo 3DS (under $200) features a 3D display, a very nice library of quality Nintendo titles and online connectivity making it a great portable gaming platform.

Preorder the PS Vita
Sony PSPgo - This is the obsolete Sony handheld system. The new Playstation Vita can be preordered for $249 and is due to be released the last week of February. This looks like a nice update but I'll be posting a review in the coming months on how it ultimately turned out.

Playstation 3 - BUY
Sony Playstation 3 - I would hope by now you have a Playstation 3 or Xbox 360. The platform delivers some incredible visuals as it is today and should be viable for years to come. But there are rumors that the 5 year old device will get an overhaul in the next couple years. I doubt it will come out next year and what capabilities beyond an even more capable multi-core processor, more memory and a snazzy graphics system the console will feature is beyond me. The Move controllers that came out last year did not set the world on fire so Sony needs some innovation in the player user interface area. I would imagine we could get more details potentially at next year's E3 or the Tokyo Game Show at the end of 2012.  While Sony really needs to revitalize their gaming console, they traditionally like to milk the current system for as long as possible.

Microsoft Xbox 360 - WAIT
Microsoft Xbox 360 - Similar to the PS3, the games coming out on the Xbox 360 are stunning but talk persists that a new platform is in the works. While there are rumors of a CES 2012 announcement, I would be surprised if it showed up there. I would expect the device to really leverage an all-new Kinect with better recognition capabilities like hand gestures. I would expect this product won't be out until 2013 at the earliest BUT Microsoft will want to get the jump on Sony again if possible.

Camera Gear?
Canon Powershot S100 - BUY
Canon S95 - I mention this camera a great deal as my favorite pocket camera and the S100 was suppose to have shipped by the holidays except for some delays in manufacturing due to the flooding in Thailand. The Canon S100 is slowing getting into the marketplace. Based on my experience with the S100, I would suggest getting this amazing point-n-shoot even if it doesn't arrive until after the holidays.

Canon 5D MK2 - WAIT
Canon DSLR cameras - On the silly high-end, Canon just announced the EOS-1Dx professional camera will be available in March 2012. The venerable Canon 5D Mark II is in need of updating and I can only assume it will get some much needed attention in 2012. The very nicely priced Canon EOS T3i and potentially the 7D are looking like they will get upgrades in the spring.

Nikon D5100 - BUY
Nikon DSLR cameras - I would not be getting a D90, D300s or D700. The D3000 and D5000 really filed the gap left behind when Nikon did not update the D90. Those cameras have seen their own upgrade to the D3100 and D5100 for the holiday season. I really like the Nikon D5100 for those of you looking to start out with a quality DSLR. Be sure to get the updated versions, I still see the older models available in some retailer ads. The D800 is rumored to be close to launch, replacing the D700.

Canon SX230 HS - BUY
Point-n-Shoot cameras - Most point and shoot camera updates are announced at CES or the ImagingUSA show in January. These product announcements are typically timed to launch the product later that next year. Some recent introductions I do like include Canon's PowerShot SX40 HS and the SX230 HS.

There are some new and exciting products available this holiday season and as you can see there are some great products on the horizon. Again, the key here is knowing what you are getting. All of these products are on my WouldntMind.com favorites list, you wouldn't go wrong with any of them BUT if you want the latest and greatest...some of these are candidate to wait for a few months if you can. We will also be covering CES this year and will report back on the exciting new "WouldntMind.com" material for your consideration in January.

Christmas Gifts for Good Little Boys and Girls (of any age) - 2011

On Friday, November 18, 2011 0 comments

Well by now you know you should not expect the usual list of gift ideas for your boys and girls from me. My lists will skew toward the cool, new and/or high-tech. I'm probably not going to dive into that new tricycle for your toddler unless it comes with OnStar location services! But that said, let's look at what cool things a kid can ask for this holiday that I wish was around when I was a little one.

Let's start with something to prime your youngest kids for a high-tech, interactive future! What about the gift of reading? Here is a great book for your geek-baby...Goodnight iPad storybook (less than $12). "Goodnight iPad, goodnight DOOM, goodnight Facebook friend, goodnight Nooks and digital books..." You get the picture :-)

What about a "pre-holiday" gift to really get the holiday spirit going? What about this great countdown LEGO STAR WARS Advent Calendar ($45)! And if the child you are buying this for is not a Star Wars fan...but I would question "why not?" Haven't you been watching the new Star Wars Clone Wars animated series? It is a great series that both adult and kids can get into...as long as you don't mind a few clones dying here and their. Anyway, back to the topic at hand. If, they are not Star Wars fans (still hard to write that), you can also consider this other very cool LEGO City Advent Calendar ($35). I know the kids that I've gotten these LEGO calendars for over the years really enjoy the countdown and simple daily LEGO building projects.

And if you have a true LEGO fan in the household, the LEGO Ideas book ($15) would make a great gift. Now be forewarned, this is a beautiful picture book to give your kids some inspiration but for the most part there is NO directions on how to build these amazing constructions. The book does feature all-new LEGO building projects, tips to supplement and enhance your LEGO creations, inspirational buildings, and expert advice from LEGO Master Builders...it is a truly inspiring book for any LEGO architect in your family.

What would a kids gift list be in 2011 without some Angry Birds items? And at the top of my list is the Angry Birds: Knock on Wood game (less than $30)! This is NOT a game app for your smart device like an Android phone or iPhone but instead brings the destructive powers of those Angry Birds to the real world. This is a great little tabletop game of flinging birds at a wide assortment of pig constructions. Hours of fun...just look at the picture to the left!

And if all that violence and destruction is unsettling for you...perhaps a nice soft 8" Plush Angry Bird (less than $15)?

If you have a Xbox 360 and haven't gotten a Kinect controller ($150) for it...get it. This is a peripheral that allows you and your kids to use your entire body to control the game. There is a slew of new titles coming out this holiday and definitely worth adding to the list. If you haven't got a 360 for your kids...why not? This is a great system and there is some amazing titles already available with new ones still in the pipeline. You can purchase the Xbox 360 console system w/Kinect ($400) as a bundle but I might have a hard time recommending getting the full system as we will probably see a new platform within 12-18 months. But there is a very solid line-up of titles that take advantage of the Kinect and make for some great family-time, multiplayer gaming...Just Dance 3, Kinect Sports: Season Two, Sesame Street: Once upon a Monster, Eden and Fruit Ninja.

A gaming console I can recommend is the Nintendo 3DS ($170). This new system was introduced this past spring and is continuing to build up a very viable line-up of portable gaming fun. The 3DS was the first portable gaming system to feature a 3D display with a slider that allows you to adjust the focus/depth for your eyes. You can even turn off the 3D effect...something I recommend as the displays are stunning without the 3D and the game will actually run at a faster frame-rate and smoother animations. I personally play with little or no 3D. Some games add a nice level of depth to the image with the 3D on. Some games worth checking out include The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D ($40), Super Mario 3D Land ($40), Mario Kart 7 ($40), Pokemon Rumble Blast 3DS ($35), Star Fox 64 3D ($40)...are you catching a pattern here? All the hot titles are Nintendo developed. But there are some very nice 3rd party titles as well including; LEGO Star Wars III The Clone Wars 3D ($20), Super Street Fighter IV: 3D Edition ($20) and coming out in December is The Adventures Of Tintin: The Game ($40). You also have access to all the new DS games (without 3D) such as the latest Professor Layton and the Last Specter ($30), Kirby Mass Attack, Let's Draw ($20) and the incredibly amazing Super Scribblenauts ($30).

If you are looking for additional recommendations for the best videogames to gift your kids/friends/family, be sure to check out my Fall 2011 Top 10 Holiday game preview.

Stepping back into the real world again, some other cool toys include the new Hot Wheels Video Racer Micro Camera Car (a little over $50) series. These high-tech little new cars capture footage from the car's perspective as it races down the track and let the kids play back the video on a small LCD on the bottom of the car or download the footage to their Windows PC to edit the action with the included application you can download. For those of you with a Macintosh computer (isn't that everyone now?), the car when hooked up via USB appears like a regular camera on the computer and the video is transferable but you will need to use your own editing software. The cars store up to 12 minutes of footage before needing to be transferred.

Of course if you have a cool, new Hot Wheels car...you'll need some cool new stunt tracks to go with it and make some neat videos. Mattel has a new series of Hot Wheels Wall Tracks ($55) that are ingeniously adhere to the wall using 3M's Command Strips that hold the tracks in place while also not damaging the surface.

If a toy car is too mundane for you, how about the coolest, easiest to fly indoor helicopter I've ever used? Check out this Syma S109G Apache AH-64 (less than $30) indoor helicopter. It is amazing to see this little guy that will fit into the palm of your hand hover, turn and fly around with easy.

Now Activision is really playing up their Skylanders Spyro's Adventure Starter Pack ($70) but I am having a hard time recommending this as it feels like such a gimmick. I just feel the product lacks some depth but on the opposite side I am sure kids will love it. This is a crossover product that combines little toy figures and a videogame. The starter pack gives you a copy of the game for your favorite gaming console (Microsoft Xbox 360, Sony PS3, Nintendo Wii and Nintendo 3DS, PC or Mac...make sure you get the right version for your gaming console), a "Portal of Power" adaptor to hook to your gaming device and three Skylanders figures. The figure connects to the console through the included Portal of Power adapter and your character shows up in the game. Take the figure with you to your friends because all the game data is saved inside the character. If you have played a Spyro game before, they are usually pretty decent action/adventure games and this one focus on the multi-player aspects of all the collectible action figure characters.

I previously wrote-up about the introduction of a new Toys R Us Nabi ($200) tablet computer that is coming out in December. There is also a new LeapFrog LeapPad Explorer Game ($100) system that is a starter tablet for ages 4-9 available in both green or pink. It includes a built-in camera and video recorder, 5" touchscreen that works with fingers ro included stylus, four apps (Pet Pad, Story Studio, Art Studio and one app of your choosing). Compatible with a library of 100+ LeapPad Explorer games and applications.

But if you want to be the "ultimate holiday giver", you can not go wrong with an iDevice. On the top of the Nielsen's kids most wanted tech for the holiday poll (ages 6-12) is the Apple iPad ($500+), iPod Touch and iPhone taking the top three positions.
Apple iPad...clearly the best holiday gift for any good girl or boy!
I am still looking for more great gift ideas for kids. Please feel free to share in the comments below if your kids have their eyes on something I haven't considered.
